Spreckels Elementary School and Joint Use Field
San Diego, California
Description: This whole-site modernization project transformed Spreckels Elementary into a modern, student-focused campus that supports academic success and community engagement. The work included full renovations of three classroom buildings, construction of two new classroom facilities, and updates to the multipurpose and administration buildings.
Open-concept classrooms were reconfigured into flexible, structured learning spaces that promote collaboration and accessibility. Large bi-folding doors and outdoor learning areas enhance natural light, ventilation, and the connection to nature.
Sustainability played a key role in the design, with energy-efficient systems that deliver over 13% site energy savings, reduce natural gas use by over 40%, and include a fully electrified new building. Features include high-efficiency HVAC, electric water heaters, and advanced LED lighting.
Through the City of San Diego’s Play All Day initiative, new joint-use fields provide recreation for students during school hours and serve the broader community after hours—making the campus a true neighborhood hub for learning and wellness.
